Bisbee, Arizona is one of southeastern Arizona’s most distinctive communities, known for its historic mining-town architecture, colorful hillside homes, narrow winding streets, stairways, and dramatic setting in the Mule Mountains. Unlike the flatter suburban development found elsewhere in Southern Arizona, many Bisbee homes are built into steep hillsides and include older construction with unique rooflines and orientations. The primary electricity provider serving Bisbee is Arizona Public Service (APS). APS customers experienced a roughly 8% increase in typical residential bills in March 2024, and another major rate proceeding is currently before the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). In its pending rate case, APS is seeking a 16.44% increase in residential-class revenue; its original overall net base-rate request was 13.99%. The 16.44% figure is a proposed increase, not an approved rate hike, with the ACC scheduled to reach a decision by the end of 2026 and any approved new rates expected to begin in early 2027. With APS seeking another substantial increase following the 2024 adjustment, solar can help Bisbee homeowners purchase less electricity from APS and reduce their exposure to future utility-rate increases.

Adding battery storage can further increase the value of a Bisbee solar system by storing excess electricity produced during sunny daytime hours for use later in the evening, during higher-demand periods, or when the grid is unavailable. This allows homeowners to consume more of their own solar production instead of relying as heavily on electricity purchased from APS. When properly configured for backup power, a battery can also keep selected essential circuits operating during an outage, including refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment, and communications.
